Breakers Unlimited's History

Ralph Wendel started Breakers Unlimited in January 1986 with the intention of fulfilling a specific need in the electrical wholesale market. Ralph was previously self-employed as a manufacturer’s representative and realized that many electrical wholesalers would benefit from having one vendor where they could purchase their miscellaneous replacement circuit breakers.

Breakers Unlimited’s initial offering consisted of a few lines of residential “plug in” circuit breakers. In the early years rapid growth occurred as more and more electrical wholesalers discovered the quality product and excellent service we provided. During this period we worked hard to expand our product offering as well as increase our inventory of hard to find circuit breakers. In 1992, Breakers Unlimited moved to its current facility and furthered our commitment to stocking almost any circuit breaker an electrical wholesaler might require. At that time, our product offering consisted of 10 brands of residential "plug in" circuit breakers, 5 brands of commercial "bolt on" circuit breakers and definite purpose contactors.

In 1995 and 1996, Breakers Unlimited purchased the following product lines from American Circuit Breaker Corporation: Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) molded case circuit breakers and Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) QMQB fusible switches. Breakers Unlimited also became the exclusive distributor of Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) NB circuit breakers. The acquisition of these product lines increased Breakers Unlimited’s national exposure and created another reason for electrical wholesalers to give us a call.

In 1996, Ralph Wendel retired from Breakers Unlimited and “passed the torch” to his son, Joe Wendel. In 1997, Joe developed the first edition of what is now called our Circuit Breaker Pricebook. The first edition was just 32 pages, but it gave many sales representatives (Breakers Unlimited’s included) a helpful tool to quote their customer’s circuit breaker needs. This yearly catalog has been continually refined and expanded since 1997 and now contains 120 internal pages.

In December 1999, Breakers Unlimited acquired The Electrical Outlet of Arvada, Colorado and Eagle Circuit Breaker of Lawrenceville, Georgia. These acquisitions greatly expanded our offering of reconditioned industrial circuit breakers, air circuit breakers, bus plugs, fusible panelboard switches, replacement contact kits and motor control. In 2001, Breakers Unlimited opened a facility in Bakersfield, California to serve the California market.  In 2005, Breakers Unlimited opened a distribution facility in Houston, Texas to better serve this market.  Our five distribution facilities are fully integrated and enable Breakers Unlimited to deliver a wide variety of replacement electrical equipment in an extremely short amount of time.
